Barrow

Greetings from Barrow, Alaska – what the locals here call “top of the world”.

Flying out tomorrow. I just put my bag in the hallway of the lodging here in Barrow, Alaska. Ready to be sent home. We are looking at quite a trip now. Barrow to Fairbanks to Anchorage to Seattle. One night in Seattle, then flying to Reykjavik and finally to Stockholm. Many will also continue on to other destinations afterwards.

Today we had a close encounter with a polar bear. It was exciting but also a bit frightening to have such a large predator so close. I was in a truck, far enough for the bear to fit within the frame. The pictures are marvelous, but I am happy to be here inside, and soon off to bed. My feet are tired from today’s walking and my mind is on things back home. Many new impressions again. Exhausted. Feeling guilty about not getting much done on my research work today. Happy to soon be home with my kids. Oden has left the horizon for its second part of the journey, and the researchers should soon be in full working mode.

I am slowly getting used to land. I admit – the ground is swaying. I am new to being at sea for long, and yes, the Oden journey has not been rocky at all! But there are apparently continuous small movements that your body registered and during the whole time here I have at times felt like the ground was not still.

Soon closing the chapter of the SWERUS C3 expedition journey. The science that will be derived with it though has just started. This is a much longer journey, and very exciting. What will the data actually show us? We have gotten a visual picture of this remote area, but now – what questions can we answer? What questions remain to be answered? A great cooperation with the Russian colleagues to have performed this massive effort in the Russian waters. Thanks to you all!
